Diarrhoea & constipation are two common conditions that will affect most babies. Let's us find out how parents can identify the symptoms, causes and the methods to deal and perhaps avoid or minimise the occurrences.

| What is? |
Hard & dry bowel movements. |
Sudden onset of frequent bowel movements that is more watery than usual. |
| Causes? |
- Babies:
Insufficient fluid either breastfed or formula fed.
- Older infants:
Addition of new food to diet such as chocolate, milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream or other milk products.
- Lack of fibre in food.
- High body temperature due to overdressing.

- Stomach infections:
Virus, bacteria, parasite & rotavirus.
- Allergy : Food or milk.
- Side effects due to oral medication like antibiotics.
- Food poisoning.
- Infections of the gastrointestinal tract.

| Dealings? |
- <4 months old:
Give fruit juices (apple, grape or prune)
- >4 months old:
Give strained food (cereal, peaches, pears, plums, beans or spinach).
Avoid squashed carrots, apple and bananas.
- 1 year & above:
a) Give more fruits & vegetables.
b) Limit milk produce.
c) Drink sufficient water.
d) Help baby pass stool by holding legs against chest.
e) Place baby in warm water to relax rectal muscle.
f) If stress is due to Toilet Training – temporarily revert back to diapers.

Main Concern : Prevent Dehydration
For babies:
- Continue breast feeding.
- Ensure sufficient water when feeding formula .
- Supplement with oral re-hydration solution.
- Try switching to soy-based formula until the diarrhoea dissipates.
Older Babies:
- Give carrots, rice cereal, bananas, potatoes and apple sauce.
- Avoid fruit juices.
Use water when cleaning baby’s bottom and reduce the use of baby wipes to prevent rashes.

| Seek Medical Attention When |
- There are no bowel movements for several days.
- Hard and painful bowel movements.
- Presence of blood.
- Tears at rectal area that are not healing.
|
- If diarrhoea lasts more than 1 week.
- Diarrhoea + 72 hours of fever.
- Shows dehydration symptoms (dry mouth, sunken soft spot, crying without tears, lethargic or doesn’t produce urine for more than 8 hours).
