Postpartum depression is a mood swing that some mothers experience after childbirth. Some blame it on their raging hormones while others say its due to stress and fatigue of baby care. Whatever the reason is postpartum depression should not be taken lightly and immediate medical attention should follow if the symptoms persist for a long period.

- Restless, irritable or anxious

- Loss of appetite
- Loss of energy or motivation to do things
- Sleeping problems (sleeps too much or can’t sleep)
- Feeling worthless, hopeless or guilty without reasons

- Do not panic and blame yourself.
- Crying baby will lead to sleep deprivation, try to catch some nap time when your baby is asleep.
Talk to Other Mums, Friends or Family
- Socialise, meet other mums and share your story or talk to your friends or family members or even your doctor.
- Get the edge off and you’ll feel much better.

- A very serious disease that shows all the symptoms of “postpartum depression” plus the “thoughts of hurting yourself or your baby”.

Time Out
- Take time out for yourself whenever you can.
- Do things that you love doing such as reading, watching TV or just relax.
- Balance between work and childcare. Enjoy your maternity leave to bond with your baby and family.
Childcare Options
- Hubby must play a part.
- Take turns to care for your baby and do the household chores.
Engage Parents to Help
- If your parents are still able and healthy, you might want to leave your baby with them and enjoy some time alone or with your hubby.
- Don’t feel guilty! Your parents might be delighted to spend time with your baby.
Day-Care Services
- Find a reliable and dependable day-care centre that you can leave your baby.

Rest, exercise, sleep well and eat healthy. Talk and share your experience!
2. Set Realistic Expectations
Do not pressure yourself unnecessarily. Take things slowly and in order till you get the hang of it.
